Yet another first day first show after 2012.  Both were not very different from each other.

The visuals are fantastic and there is  fine attention to detail not seen since Finding Nemo.  With 3D, it takes the visual spectacle to a different level.  The concept of connecting with anything living and native to the planet through a sensory organ attached to the head is quite interesting.  But the story is as old as it gets – boy meets girl and helps underdogs fight the invaders.  Not that a cliched plot can make for a good story, but this one fails.

Dances with Wolves and this movie make for an interesting comparison based on the story.  Dances with Wolves had fine acting, strong emotional pull, realistic visuals set mostly in the real world and was an instant classic and huge sucess.  Avatar is set in a CGI canvas, has a weak story line, uninspiring dialogue and very ordinary acting.  James Cameron’s epic has all the ingredients to make for a smashing commercial success. But I doubt it will ever be remembered for acting or a strong plot. Nonetheless, the graphics have set a new benchmark.

James’ mind set is nicely captured in one of the few comical reliefs in the movie – A badly injured Sigourney Weaver when being carried to the Na’ avi’s holy tree is more worried about collecting the tree’s tissue samples than her life.  In his fixation to set a new benchmark for visual experience, James Cameron has forgotten the essential ingredient to a great movie — a strong plot.

Verdict:  If you enjoyed 2012, Titanic etc, you are sure to enjoy this one too! I did. :)
