Science fiction in Indian movies…

Sucks BIG time! They are nothing more than laughable attempts that seriously insult your intellect. No! For heaven’s sake, don’t blame it on lack of budget to match the special effects in Hollywood movies. Lovestory 2050 was a pathetic attempt. I haven’t watched the movie fully but that is to avoid serious injury to my senses. Let me try to clear the air.

Fact# 3 – Get the basics right. Reincarnation is not science fiction. It is a pseudo-science. And to expect the aliens to be bipedal and green is so 70s sci-fi. If they were bipedals and have a neck and head like us, would they be so alien? And don’t think the only other form of aliens is cockroaches and slugs. Men in Black is a brain dead comedy movie. Only morons and Indian sci-fi directors think of it as sci-fi. Please watch the movie Solaris starring George Clooney or read the book called Solyaris to widen your imagination of an alien life form.

Fact# 2 – Sci-fi movies need not be set in future. Scientific discoveries and breakthroughs are being made every other minute. We are having cloned animals, we have people who’ve dedicated their lives to make contact with aliens, blah, blah. Watch Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind starring Jim Carrey (yes, you got that right!), Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst & Elijah Wood, (how is that for a casting coup?) which is widely acknowledged as one of the finest sci-fi movies ever made with an intriguing plot.

Fact# 1 – It is not graphics that determines the quality of the sci-fi movie. It is a fundamental requirement of all good cinema – a good plot. There is no substitute for a good plot. Take The Matrix for example. It was not just the chic style and eye catching graphics that makes the movie so good. It is the plot that deals with so many deeply philosophical subjects like meaning of existence, the mundane life most lead and what constitutes intelligence etc. Every other factor just enhances it.

But again, mainstream Indian movies are a joke by themselves. Most think a “man eater” is the new face of bold Indian women (Bharathi and Tagore must be crying in their graves) or confused desis running behind chicks in some western country only to later “discover” our “culture” is ground breaking or fighting a Muslim villain who inevitably, will be trained in Pakistan is patriotism (no wonder right wing extremism and intolerance is on the rise). The directors mostly pander to the masses’ tastes. Whatever good movies that are made get lost in the noise.

Pixar, save us from this humiliation by producing Indian movies!!!!
